Ragging is any act that causes, or is likely to cause, physical or psychological harm or apprehension, shame, or embarrassment to a student. It includes:
Verbal abuse or teasing
Forced or humiliating tasks
Physical or emotional harassment
Any form of bullying or intimidation
Group-based discrimination
Ragging is not a form of bonding — it is a punishable offense.
Legal Framework
As per the directives of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Supreme Court of India, ragging is a criminal offense. Those found guilty may face:
Immediate suspension or expulsion
Legal action including FIRs and criminal prosecution
Cancellation of admission
Debarring from exams, scholarships, or placements
